After the Pope’s death, his ring (the so-called Fisherman’s Ring) is taken away and destroyed

Chronology

When Cardinal Lawrence is given the task of presiding over one of the most secret and ancient events in the world: the election of a new Pope. He finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy that could shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Much of what Cardinal Lawrence and the other cardinals do during the conclave process in the film is in keeping with Catholic belief and centuries-old tradition. The Vatican officially announces that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant. The Papal Apartments are cordoned off with a red ribbon and sealed with a Papal wax stamp. The College of Cardinals is sequestered in chambers (Domus Sanctae Marthae, House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes. Finally, the windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the actual election takes place and the votes are cast, are darkened, shuttered and locked to preserve the secrecy of the conclave.

And therefore no need for faith

It is said that Ayendi would be the first African pope. The Roman Catholic Church has had three African popes: Victor I (189-199 AD), Miltiades (also known as Melchiades, 311-314 AD) and Gelasius I (492-496 AD). Lawrence: Our faith is alive precisely because it goes hand in hand with doubt. If there were only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery. Let us pray that God will give us a pope who doubts. And let him give us a Pope who sins and asks for forgiveness and moves on.. Featured on The 7PM Project: Episode dated December 10, 2024 (2024).

a film for adults

Allegri: Miserere. Performed by Capella Musicale Pontificia Sistina, Massimo Palombella. Courtesy of Deutsche Grammophon GmbH. Under license from Universal Music Operations Ltd. And now… Based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris, CONCLAVE takes viewers inside the Vatican during the College of Cardinals’ process to select the new Pope… full of political infighting, unexpected twists and surprises galore.

the “adults” are flocking to this film

And… if the average age of the people in the theater where I attended a screening is any indication… Directed by Edward Berger (THE WESTERN QUIET), CONCLAVE moves briskly along, solving a mystery – not a “who did it” but more of a “who’s going to get it” – and it gets surprisingly suspenseful. That’s thanks in part to the truly great actors cast in this film. Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort in the HARRY POTTER films) anchors the proceedings as the “dean” of cardinals, tasked with leading the disparate group of cardinals to a consensual election of the next pope. He acts as both detective and mediator as he wrestles with his own sense of faith… and ambition…

I would have been happy without that point

while uncovering the intrigues and plots of some of the “humble servants” vying for the top job. Helping out are John Lithgow, Isabella Rosellini and a whole host of others (mostly unknown) who are vying for “pole position” in the race to be the next Pope. Special mention goes to the GREAT Stanley Tucci for his supporting role as one of the contenders whose plea seems to be “I don’t want this” but who really, really does. Don’t be surprised if both Fiennes and Tucci (as well as director Berger) are mentioned when it comes to the Oscar nomination (that’s how good they are). As mentioned above, this film has plenty of twists and turns and it’s fun to witness those twists, but if I’m being honest, I felt like this film “went one twist too far” and should/could have ended 10 minutes before the end (without that one final twist). Now some would say that that final twist is the point of the film, but… Judge for yourself… and go to the cinema with other “adults”.
