Lorne Michaels: [sarcastic] Yes, all night long
Lorne Michaels: Listen, I’m Lorne Michaels, producer of “Saturday Night.” Doorman: All night long? The movie opens with a quote from Lorne Michaels: “The show doesn’t go on because it’s done, it goes on because it’s 11:30 PM.” He starred in Eddie Murphy, le roi noir d’Hollywood (2023). Ixoo “Chickenweed” Chawz Written by Don Cento and Martin Garner Performed by Don Cento and Martin Garner As someone who grew up with Saturday Night Live (SNL) in the background most Saturday nights, it’s no wonder I developed a deep affection for the show thanks to my parents. Over the years, the format and the talent involved have steadily improved. Even though I belong to an era that featured names like Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, and Tina Fey, I’ve always fondly remembered the classic episodes. There are sketches from decades ago that I still revisit because they’re just so iconic.
The film dives into the behind-the-scenes madness leading up to the October 11, 1975 premiere
Of course, all of this has piqued my curiosity about the movie Saturday Night , which is in theaters now. And if you’re a fan of the show, especially one who’s already seen the original cast from the ’70s, here’s why you should definitely watch the series. Most people see Saturday Night Live as a laid-back, easy-going way to watch for a late-night laugh. However, many don’t realize how chaotic and stressful the show was, especially in the beginning. Ninety minutes before the live show went live, the set was still unfinished, people were being laid off, mistakes were being made left and right. It was a whirlwind of confusion and stress, and the film puts you right in the middle of it.
It’s an exciting journey with not a dull moment
From the moment you’re thrown onto the set, you feel the undeniable energy as everyone scrambles to get everything ready. Directed by Jason Reitman, Saturday Night feels like his best work since 2009’s Up in the Air . His direction gives the film a kinetic, almost manic energy, perfectly capturing the chaos of a live production on the brink of collapse. The cast delivers excellent performances, each reflecting Reitman’s high-octane tone. Dylan O’Brien is excellent as Dan Aykroyd, Cory Michael Smith captures the essence of Chevy Chase, and Nicholas Braun toggles between two distinct characters impressively throughout the film. The standout, however, is Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels, the mastermind behind it all.
LaBelle, who starred in Spielberg’s “Fabulous Men,” really shines here, delivering a groundbreaking performance that underpins the entire film
His portrayal of Michaels is captivating, and he’s almost entirely in the film, with only a few scenes where he’s not the focal point. Now, while “Saturday Night” excels at capturing the essence of its characters and providing laugh-out-loud humor, it does have one notable flaw: it adds to the believability of how all of this could have played out in just 90 minutes. While the film isn’t intended to show sketches of SNL itself, I couldn’t help but feel that the story ended a bit abruptly. I was expecting the ending, but still felt like there could have been a few more beats before the credits rolled.
