Originally set up with CBS for a series commitment in 2020, it was canceled just before the first episode was to film due to COVID. It’s now been picked up by Netflix for a 10-episode first season based on Mickey Haller’s second book “The Brass Verdict.” Mickey Haller has several cars, all with personalized California license plates with legal terms on them.

Personalized California plates allow a maximum of seven letters/numbers, but all of Mickey’s plates have at least eight. A rehabilitated drug lawyer with two ex-wives, a daughter, and a penchant for cars is thrust into the spotlight of a high-profile case after a friend dies.

This intriguing premise creates a backdrop full of opportunities for a legal procedural series. The series takes it, adds a strong cast, well-crafted and delivered dialogue, and an interesting plot, and moves along at a good pace.

It’s engaging, entertaining, and enjoyable throughout – highly recommended

Some of the cinematography choices are awkward, particularly the shots with variable focus and some orange casts, though overall it works as intended. Mickey’s driver, Izzy, is often used as a plot device, but while it’s obvious, it feels natural and in keeping with the narrative.
